Exposure Response Prevention

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialised, evidence-based form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) that is widely recommended for the treatment of OCD.

ERP works by helping you gradually face situations, thoughts or feelings that trigger your OCD, while learning to resist the compulsions or rituals you would usually use to manage the resulting anxiety.

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that can cause significant anxiety, distress and uncertainty. It involves a cycle of unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images or urges (obsessions) and behaviours or mental rituals (compulsions) that a person feels driven to carry out in an attempt to reduce anxiety or prevent something bad from happening.

OCD can take many different forms. You might experience fears about contamination, concerns about harming yourself or others, a need for things to feel just right, or persistent doubts about whether you have made a mistake. You may find yourself repeatedly checking, seeking reassurance, avoiding certain situations or mentally reviewing events in an attempt to feel certain or safe.

These thoughts and behaviours can feel exhausting and difficult to control. Although compulsions may bring temporary relief, this relief often reinforces the OCD cycle, making the thoughts and urges return.

OCD is not simply about being tidy, organised or liking things a certain way. It can affect many areas of life, including relationships, work, family life and your sense of self. You may recognise that your fears or rituals seem excessive, yet still find it incredibly difficult to resist them.

Exposure Response Prevention

ERP involves reducing repeated checking, gradually facing situations you have been avoiding, resisting the urge to seek reassurance, or learning to allow intrusive thoughts to be present without trying to neutralise them.

ERP is not about forcing yourself into overwhelming situations or dismissing your fears. It is a collaborative process in which we work together at a manageable pace, building your confidence in responding differently to OCD.

Over time, ERP can help you learn that:

  • You can experience uncertainty without needing to resolve it immediately.

  • Anxiety and uncomfortable feelings can be tolerated without performing compulsions.

  • Intrusive thoughts do not need to dictate your behaviour.

  • You can begin to break the cycle of OCD and reclaim time and energy for the things that matter to you.

The aim is not to eliminate every unwanted thought or never feel anxious again. Instead, ERP helps you change your relationship with intrusive thoughts and uncertainty, so that OCD has less control over your life.

Integrative Approach

While ERP provides a structured approach to working with OCD, I also recognise that your experience extends beyond your symptoms.

Living with OCD can affect your confidence, relationships and emotional wellbeing. You may feel exhausted by the constant demands of your thoughts, struggle with feelings of shame or frustration, or find it difficult to explain your experiences to the people around you.

As an integrative therapist, I offer a supportive, non-judgemental space in which we can work with the OCD itself while also exploring the wider emotional and relational experiences that may be affecting you.

Alongside ERP, where appropriate, we can explore how OCD affects your relationship with yourself and others, how you experience difficult emotions and how you might develop greater self-understanding and compassion.

My approach recognises that you are more than your OCD. The aim is not simply to manage symptoms, but to help you develop greater freedom in how you live, relate to others and respond to your experiences.
